Notes: Isaiah
When the time is right I, the LORD, will make it happen.
Isaiah
- A Jerusalem prophet
- God is patient, but He eveentually punishes people and nations for their persistent sin. The punishment isn’t vindictive, it’s intended as a remedy to turn people away from sins that hurt themselves and others.
- Isaiah lived in the 700s BC
- Isaiah is quoted 50+ times in the New Testament.
- Isaiah says Jews go through the m otions of worship. He wants people to: do good, seek justice, help the oppressed.
- If the people don’t stop sinning they will suffer like Sodom and Gomorrah.
- Isaiah told Jews not to make military alliance with Egypt, but they did anyway to break free from the Assyrians.
- Isaiah begins his ministry in 740BC.
- Throughout Isaiah, Israel is defeated, exiled and other bad things as punishment for its sins against God. Over and over again.
- God destroys Israel, and also then destroys Israel’s oppressors. Then God forgives the Jews and gives them another chance when the Persian emporer Cyrus sets them free and tells them to go home and rebuild their nation.
- God tells the Jews, “Though I have destroyed you in my anger, I will now have mercy on you through My grace.” (Isaiah 60:10)
