Numbers

Paul’s second letter to the people of Corinth, this time defending his ministry which has been slandered and attacked by members who are spreading lies about him. He is defending himself against “intruders” who are pummeling him with deceitful criticism.

Deuteronomy

These are the last words of Moses. If the Israelites obey God, they can expect protection, blessing and a good life in their promised homeland. If they don’t, they might as well pack their bags and move on, before God sends disaster, disease, and invaders to drive them out.

Joshua

Paul wrote this letter to the Christians from Ephesus. It’s an upbeat letter, despite Paul writing this letter while under arrest (he’s writing “in chains”. He’s praising the readers of his letter for their solid Christian reputation, and is reminding them that Jesus is the source of their salvation. He also is giving them advice for keeping up the good work.

Judges

God never gives up on His people. When they sin – as they repeatedly do throughout the book of Judges – He punishes them by sending oppressors. But every time the Isrealites repent and ask God for help, He delivers. Each time God sent a leader called a “judge”, which actually meant ruler, leader, tribal ruler. These leaders often rallied the Israelites and drove off the oppressors. There were twelve ‘judges’.

It’s a tough crowd since the island people of Crete are descended from mercenaries, swindlers and pirates.
