In the past God spoke to our ancesters through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom also He made the universe.
Hebrews | 1:1-2
  • When God speak of a “new covenant”, it means He has made the first one (Moses? or Davidic? or both) obsolete.
  • Written before 97AD probably in the 60s
  • Yom Kippur is the Day of Atonement
  • The Jews are no longer the chosen people. The covenant with Abraham has expired. This Christian covenant is the new and improved covenant.
  • The law abiding Jewish religion is obsolete
  • “Christ” is actually a title describing Jesus as the Messiah. Jesus Christ (Messiah).
  • Christianity radically changes the Jewish religion.
  • Christianity is the next step in God’s plan for salvation. It’s a step that the Old Testament prophets predicted.
  • New means old is obsolete
  • Jews believe angels are revered beings holy enought to stand in God’s presence. But Christianity says that Jesus is higher than the angels.
    • Angels actually worship Jesus (1:6)
  • Moses is like an angel on earth because he could stand in God’s presence as a friend (Exodus 33:11)
  • As Jesus is higher than the angels, he is also higher than Moses.
  • Jesus ministers His people (as teh High Priest) in heaven on the right side of God. He ministers in heaven’s temple in the very presence of God.
  • People no longer have to to to the temple to speak to God and profess their sins and ask for forgiveness.
  • Jesus lives forever so his priesthood lsts forever.
  • Hebrews 10 | God’s will was for us to be made holy by the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ, once for all time.
  • In the eyes of God, sin is a capital offense requiring the death penalty, but God (in the Old Testament) allowed Jews/Isreaelites to sacrifice pure defect free animals as substitutews. The animal (lamb, goat, bird… ) dies in place of the sinner to atone for their own sins against God. The animal gets the death penalty instead.
  • But this system didn’t change the spirit of most people. They kept sinning.
  • Jesus’ sacrifice is different. With his death sacrifice he has forever set us free from sin, the people He brings to God. (10:14)
  • No more sacrifices, reminders of sin or slavery to sin. instead, freedom to serve God and to receive instant forgiveness when asked because they sacrifice has already been made with Jesus’ Death.
  • Faith is more important to God than the rituals of the Jewish religion.
Hebrews 1:1-14

  • In the past God spoke to people through the prophets.
  • Then He spoke to us through His Son, jesus Christ.
    • Appointed heir of all things by his Father, God
    • Through His Son, God made the universe
    • The Son is the radiance of God’s glory
    • The Son. isthe exact representation of God’s being.
    • The Son sustains all things by His powerful word.
    • After providing purification for sins (humanity’s sins, Jesus was sinless), the Son sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.
    • The Son is at a higher level than the angels.
    • God told Jesus that He was his Father, The Christ is His Son…
    • “You are my Son; today I have become your Father (1:5)
    • God told the angels to worship the Sone.
    • God says that the Son’s throne will last forever and every. A scepter of justice will be scepter of his kingdom, a symbol of authority and power and sovereignty.
    • His Son loves righteousness and hates wickedness.
    • God has set the Son above the Son’s companions by anointing the Son with the oil of joy.
    • God claims the Son laid teh foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of the Son’s hands. The earth and the heavens will perish, but the Son will remain.
    • They will wear out like a garment, and like a garment can be changed.
    • But the Son will remain the same and his years will never end.
    • God tells His son to sit at His right hand until He makes the Son (Jesus’) enemies a footstool for his feet.
  • Angels are ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit the salvation through Jesus. Angels will serve the Son’s purpose.
  • Angels are servants, not authority figures, but instead they obey the will of God under His direction.
  • God is giving rule and authority to Christ the Son.
  • Gos speaks to us through Jesus.
  • Jesus is unchanging, eternal and full of authority. He is NOT a created being. He is idenbtical to God.
  • Jesus is called God and has a throne that lasts forever. He is above all other authorities and is not an angelic being or a created spiritual power.
  • Jesus created the world and will own it at the end of time. He upholds the universe with the word of his power.
  • Jesus suffered and died to purify sins.
  • Only Jesus can save people
  • Jesus is God in the flesh
  • He came int the world and revealed God fully.
